Day 11 of “AAsher’s 12 days of birthday gifts”!!
Today we went to MD Anderson Cancer Center! To keep from getting into trouble by taking pictures INSIDE the hospital, we decided to hang out outside and let AAsher pick his gift recipients. He had his
wagon full of BRIGHT colored flowers. I knew he was going to find more than 3 people he wanted to give to, so I had 12 flowers ready for him I didn’t realize until we got there that there is also MD Anderson Children’s Hospital at that facility too!! (next year we will be prepared for KIDS!!!)
There were SOOOOO many people going in and out and I think he was a bit overwhelmed at first. He walked back and forth and back and forth in front of the hospital before he picked his first receiver. His
first pick was a mother and her son that we coming out of the hospital. The boy was around 12 years old and AAsher loved his bald head His mom was very grateful for the gifts (they got two flowers) and she told AAsher that he must have known that she was having a “not so great day”! (I won’t be posting any pictures of the children here, but they will be included in AAsher’s album that I have printed.)
His next receiver was an elderly man that was sitting with his wife. The man got the card and a tiny flower and the lady got the bigger flower. AAsher is so smart They both wished him a very happy birthday! He loves when people say happy birthday!! He claps every time like it’s a party!! LOL
His next receiver was a sweet older man wearing a surgical mask and AAsher must have known that he really needed a pick me up today, because he made “8” trips back and forth to his wagon for flowers for
him!!! The man asked him if he was sure he wanted to give him ALL of his flowers and AAsher signed “YES” to him and then blew him kisses I hope his day was just a little bit brighter if even only for a minute…….
It was so cute to watch all of the people that were sitting on the benches watching, because as AAsher would walk back and forth, they had looks of “will he pick me next” on their faces. It was like they were waiting to win the “AAsher-flower-lottery”. LOL
When his wagon was empty and we were leaving, everyone that had been watching was telling him Happy Birthday AAsher and clapping for him :))) He was a little superstar!
There is sooo much that I could say about stinking cancer, but I wouldn’t be saying anything that most everyone in the world, that has been changed by it at sometime, wouldn’t have already said……. I sure hope that there’s a cure soon!!
Day 11 was a success!!
Only one more day of this 12 days of gifts year…….. our little guy will be 4 years old tomorrow and he will have a BIG gift day tomorrow!!
Thank you everyone who has been following and sharing his journey this year! We appreciate every single one of you and I will be printing all of your comments to go along with the pictures for AAsher’s

Day 10 of “AAsher’s 12 days of birthday gifts”!!! I can’t believe there’s only 2 MORE DAYS!!!!!!!
Day 10 is all about showing AAsher’s “grand-parents” how much he appreciates and loves them!!
Our first stop was at AAsher’s Great-Aunt Kathy’s house! Aunt Kathy is more like another grandmother to AAsher than an aunt! She spoils him to no end!!!! She calls him her little “cuddle bear” and whatever he does (good or bad), it’s okay with her. lol We don’t get to see her as often as we would like, so it was so much fun to be able to surprise her with flowers today! When we got to her house, she wasn’t there!!! So, we had to call around and try to find her without her knowing what we were doing! Just when we were about to give up, we heard she was coming down the road, so we jumped back in the truck and hid around the corner until she pulled into the driveway. We hurried back and AAsher surprised her like Publisher’s Clearinghouse! She was so excited!! He gave her big hugs and kisses and of course SHE gave HIM a gift to take home. (spoiled kid) Thank you Aunt Kathy, we love you!!
Our next stop was NaNa’s house!!! She had no clue that we were surprising HER too!!! The look on her face was priceless when she opened the door and saw AAsher standing there! She had been so excited all year about AAsher’s 12 days of gifts and she shares every day! SURPRISE NANA, YOU WERE DAY 10!!! AAsher’s NaNa is the BEST!!!! She was spoiling him rotten long before he was even born! The day we found out that we were pregnant, she went out and bought a bunch of girl outfits and a bunch of boy outfits. lol She has always gone over and beyond to make sure that he has everything that he’s needed and has been a huge supporter for Down syndrome and all of the fundraisers and functions that we have. Thank you NaNa! We love you to infinity and beyond! You are the best!!
Our next stop (well after dark), is not a blood relative, but she has grown a part of our family in our hearts. When we got to her son’s house where she’s been staying after her surgery, she had already left to go get something for dinner, but we left the card and flowers for her for when she returned. She sent me the sweetest message when she got them I’m going to have to take AAsher down there for a few pictures with her in the daylight!! But for now, I borrowed a picture of her from her Fb page
Ms. Payne was our neighbor at the last house we lived in and she adopted my kids as her grandchildren. Especially Wayllon and AAsher (since they were home the most). From the first time she came to introduce herself to us, we have loved her! From all the gifts of love and cookies & taking kids to Wal-Mart for toys and her unstoppable support for everything that the kids are involved in, she couldn’t be any more a part of our family! We love you Ms. Payne!!!
Day 10 was a success!!
Sharing with your friends is encouraged!!! We want others to be inspired to do nice things for others!! It’s so much better to give!!

Day 9 (makeup) of “AAsher’s 12 days of birthday gifts”!!
Today we finally made it to the local Food Bank!! We made it right before the closed, but at least we made it!!
AAsher’s wagon was filled with “3” of each of his favorites. Cans of green beans, cans of ABC’s/123’s, mashed potatoes & mac n’ cheese for a total of “12” items!!
When we got inside, the building was full of people working, but all seemed too busy to help….. AAsher walked around and around “looking” for someone to give his gifts to. Finally this sweet little lady asked him if she could help him. After a bit of coaxing, because after all, SHE picked him and not vice versa (he’s very particular about him being the “picker” lol) He agreed to give her his little card and wagon full of goodies. He unloaded each item, one by one and grouped by item. (I have no idea where he gets his OCD behavior from). When his wagon was empty, he blew her a little kiss and he was gone!!
Short and sweet trip to the food bank!! I love that he has his own little way of doing things and is very independent! He’s growing up
Day 9 was a success!
Thank you everyone for sharing our little guys journey with your friends!! I’m hoping that others will do kind things in their neighborhoods too!

Day 8 of “AAsher’s 12 days of birthday gifts”!! CAN YOU BELIEVE WE ARE ALREADY ON DAY 8!?!?!?! Our little guy is almost 4 YEARS OLD!!!!!!
Oh day 8, how I knew that you were coming and I tried so hard to prepare myself mentally, but as usual, my heart took over!! It didn’t help that it’s really cold here in Texas right now and the thought
of people having no place to live, well, that’s just horrible Yep, you guessed it. Today we drove downtown to the heart of Houston to give gifts to the homeless…………..
AAsher’s wagon was filled with fuzzy, red blankets (he picked them out) and blessing bags! His blessing bags were gallon ziploc bags filled with: deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, razors, shaving cream, soap, baby wipes, fruit snacks, packs of peanut butter crackers, granola bars, McDonald’s gift cards and LOTS OF LOVE!!
We drove around in search of people that were all alone, or at least not more than 3, since we only had three sets of gifts to give. Do you know how hard that is? It’s so sad that there are SOOOO
MANY…..my heart just wants to take them all home
The first person that we found was curled up in a ball under the interstate. We couldn’t see at the time whether it was a lady or a man. All we could see were the shoes sticking out. Crocs…You know those rubbery slipper shoe things with all the holes in the tops…that’s what was sticking out. Except for these crocs, the front of the one shoe was missing and the dirty sock was poking through. I couldn’t find a place to pull over, so I had to go back down the interstate, do a U-turn and then go back. I was in the process of parking when we realized that SHE had gotten up and was coming our way. (thank goodness, because crossing 4 lanes of traffic to get to the underside of the interstate…… not my idea of a good time with a toddler!) We waited there in the parking lot for her to come across and I could already feel my “strong front” breaking down. AAsher was like a horse at the starting gate, there was no holding him back! He took off across the lot towards her, waving his little blue card. He gave her his gifts, grabbed his little wagon and was just about to leave, when all of a sudden he ran back and kissed her leg. The only words that she spoke during the whole exchange were “my sweet little baby” “thank you”…… I didn’t see if she had tears in her eyes (due to mine being filled), but as she walked away, I saw her wipe her eyes when she looked back at us.
Oh my heart…..how do I just drive away………..
Back in the truck we go and it’s starting to get dark……. I knew that if I drove down around the bus station, that I would have no problem finding homeless people… the problem is finding one or two, not 50. As I was driving, we noticed a man pushing a shopping cart and no kidding, it looked like the Beverly Hillbillies truck! How it all stayed that high in the air was unbelievable! I had to make 4 u-turns and go down 6 ONE WAY streets to get over to the area where he was walking. Of course, I broke about 15 laws, but I made it!!! I had to park a block away (Houston streets….love them…not). By this time, it’s getting REALLY dark. I’m not gonna lie, it’s pretty darned scary down there at night time!! With the kids no doubt! But, with faith that we would be okay, we started on our walk. Now, what happened next, I still can not even explain!!! We were walking down the sidewalk and the man that we were going to find, was on the opposite block from us and had his back turned. I could see through the weeds of the overgrown lot that was between us, that he had a camp of sorts in there. There was NO WAY he saw us coming from where I parked and there was NO WAY that he could have known that we were walking to see him!!! HE HAD HIS BACK TURNED!! BUT SOMEHOW HE *DID* KNOW!!! As we were walking, of course I was watching him and trying to take pictures of his “camp” and that crazy shopping cart, but then suddenly, he stands up with two things in his hand and comes straight to AAsher. He says “there you are little buddy” and he hands AAsher a little kid sized backpack with CARS (the movie)
picture on it and a little tiny photo album!!!!!!! WHAT IN THE HECK JUST HAPPENED???????? I’m telling you, it was the craziest thing ever!!!! It’s like he KNEW that AAsher was coming!!!!!! C-R-A-Z-Y!!!!
AAsher gave him the blanket and the blessing bag and they just for a few seconds, just looked at each other. I don’t even know how to put it into words!! I can tell you without a doubt, that THAT MOMENT, THAT ENCOUNTER…… WAS TOTALLY MEANT TO BE!! I had to look back at the pictures on my camera when we got back into the truck to make sure that HE WAS EVEN REAL!! Brian and I just looked at each other and neither of us had words!
My next stop just happened to be directly across the street and 2 blocks over. The Catholic church! The only reason we could even see that there was someone there was because of the street lights. IT WAS TOTALLY DARK by now! We could see a heap of stuff and what looked like a person balled up in the corner. So, we proceeded up the steps of the church to find TWO people! Two very nice men who were balled up from the cold and very, very appreciative of the gifts. I’m hoping that since they were together, that they wouldn’t mind sharing the gifts….. I’m hopeful. They must have told AAsher “thank you” and “happy birthday” 100 times! AAsher was so happy and clapping. It was so cute!
Day 8 was a TOTAL success!!!
WHAT A DAY!!! WHAT A GREAT DAY!!
Kerri – AKA “AAsher’s mommy”
Only 4 days to go…………….
Day 7 (makeup) of “AAsher’s 12 days of birthday gifts”!!
Boy oh boy what a day we had!!! Not only did we accomplish day 7 gift giving, but day 8 also! AAsher had a blast! (and the rest of us did too) We did A LOT of driving today!!!
For day 7 we decided to pay visits to the local police station, EMS and the county sheriff/state troopers station!
Our first stop was the local police station, AAsher marched right on up to the door with his wagon full of birthday hat decorated cupcakes and one of his special glitter heart cards The police woman at the window looked sort of confused when we all walked in, so daddy pointed down to the floor and she stood up to look and you would have thought that there was a million dollars down there on the floor! Her eyes lit up and she was so excited to see him with his little wagon. She asked us to wait for just a minute and next thing we know she’s opening the door along with another police woman. They received AAsher’s gifts with such big smiles and then invited him into the front part of the station where they have a big Christmas tree and were showing him all the ornaments and the big police star that’s on the wall. He was having a blast! We almost couldn’t get him to leave! He gave lots of hugs and blew them lots of kisses. We are definitely going to have to visit them again. Maybe with some Christmas cookies next time
Our next stop was at the EMS station. The big doors were open and from the looks of it, they were out on a call…….. we knocked and knocked on the doors and rang the bell a few times, but no one ever came, so we left the cupcakes (Transformer decorated), the glittery heart card and AAsher’s picture card on a chair right next to the ambulance. Hopefully they enjoyed them when they returned!!
After stopping at McDonald’s for AAsher’s chicken nuggets, we proceeded on our journey to the Sheriff/State Troopers station!! This time AAsher’s little wagon was filled with Toy Story cupcakes & a glittery heart card. After knocking on the door, a very nice officer opens the door and I think he was kinda scared. lol AAsher ambushed him with cards and cupcakes without giving him a second to even process what was going on. haha! After taking a second to read AAsher’s card and realized that AAsher was giving HIM gifts for HIS birthday, he was totally excited! We told him that the cupcakes had Toy Story decorations on them because that’s AAsher’s favorite movie AND GUESS WHAT……… THE POLICE MAN’S NAME WAS SHERIFF WOODY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOOOOOOOOO KIDDING!!! It was totally meant to be!!
AAsher’s day 7 makeup was a success!!! So many smiles and hugs and just good old human kindness!! You just can’t beat that feeling!!
It’s true what they say you know. Giving is a whole lot better than receiving! Everyone should try it….it’s kind of addicting
Thank you for following our little guys journey with all the sweet comments and support! We are so blessed!

Day 6 (makeup) of “AAsher’s 12 days of birthday gifts”!
Today, AAsher woke up fever free and feeling like his normal, happy self! (thank goodness). Since he hadn’t been 24 hours fever free, we decided to do something that didn’t require spreading germs to
others! (not a good gift idea in my opinion).
Having so many kids (and daddy) in the house, there is an endless supply of empty toilet paper rolls (that nobody but mommy seems to know how to change). Soooooooooo, we recycled those into homemade bird
feeders for our feathered friends!!
AAsher LOVED spreading the peanut butter all over the rolls (and himself) and sprinkling the birdseed into it (and I’m sure that I’ll never get all of the birdseed out of the carpet).
After he finished all of the feeders, we started piling on the clothes/hats/jackets/boots to go outside to hang them up! It’s funny to say jackets/hats here in Texas…….. just a couple of days ago
everyone was wearing shorts and tank tops!!! But for the past couple of days, it’s been COOOOLD and rainy (probably why everyone is Sick!)
Daddy lifted AAsher up high enough to hang his 3 feeders in the tree in our front yard and when he was done, he ran to the next tree wanting to hang more………… looks like I’ll be collecting more
toilet paper rolls
Tomorrow after church, we will be BUSY, BUSY, BUSY getting caught up with day 7 AND 8!!! Both being awesome gift days!! I’m sure I’m going to cry!
Thank you to everyone for the well wishes and love and support for our little guy!!! Praying that he stays well and his immune system stays strong!!
Day 6 (makeup) was a success!!
I’ll be trying to catch some pictures of the birdies enjoying their gifts to add to the video!!

Day 5 of “AAsher’s 12 days of birthday gifts”!!
Today we visited Kidz Harbor. For those of you who are new to AAsher’s journey, Kidz Harbor is a temporary Shelter that provides emergency shelter to abandoned, abused & neglected children ages birth-18 residing in the state of Texas and also a therapeutic Group Home that provides a permanent place to thrive for Texas children ages 12-18 .
As soon as AAsher got to the door, the ladies inside knew exactly who he was!! They still had his cards from last year pinned to their bulletin boards He ran right up with a big hug like they were old friends. LOL
He had 3 kids gifts to give today and two big trays of yummy chocolate cupcakes decorated with Toy Story faces (since that’s his favorite)!! When he emptied his wagon of all of his gifts, he turned to me and signed “more more more”. haha. He was not done with his giving!!
Today we were able to meet a couple of the kids that live there, that have special abilities, when they were getting off of the school bus!! We couldn’t take their pictures though. AAsher must have told them “HI” 20 times. It was really cute!!
We did learn that there are 45 kids living there right now!!!!!!! A LOT I KNOW!!!! Of course, I had an idea while I was there and I got a list of names/ages from the nice ladies so that we can gather up some donations for gift cards for Christmas!!!!! So anyone that is interested in donating, please leave a comment below and when I get the account set up for them, I’ll let you all know! We have to act quickly!!!!
I would have to say that Day 5 was a success!!
**Please feel free to share and of course leave a comment for AAsher for his scrapbook
